Avoid misconceptions about organic foods

Q:Are organic foods better for you?

A:There's no denying it. Organic foods have been gaining momentum for the past few years. With the buzz out there, one would think organic food is a mainstay.

Choosing organic foods is a wise choice, and goes deeper than avoiding exposure to pesticides. While we have been told there is little difference between the basic nutritional properties of organically versus traditionally grown food, recent studies have shown organically grown produce to be higher in phytochemicals. Plants produce phytochemicals as part of their "immune system" to fight off insects and microorganisms. By "protecting" plants from invasion by insects through the use of pestides, we are actually reducing their need to manufacture these cancer-fighting chemicals.
